Why the Best Adventure Games Are the Short Ones
We're conditioned to think value comes from length. Forty hours of content, a hundred hours, endless side quests. But some of the most memorable games I've played on my phone are the short ones, and Hollow Lantern is a perfect case study.
It runs maybe three to four hours. In that time it tells a complete, wordless story about loss and moving on, and it never pads itself with busywork. Every room has a purpose. Nothing is repeated to fill time. When it ended, I sat there for a minute just taking it in.
A longer version of that game would have been a worse one. The restraint is the whole point. It trusts you to fill the gaps with your own imagination, and that's why it lingers.
So next time you skip a game because it's 'only a few hours,' reconsider. A tight, well-made short experience can leave a bigger mark than something you slog through for a month.
